For the past 100 years, salespeople have been taught to be gregarious, happy, and friendly, greeting their prospects with a cheerful, “Hey there! How’s it going? So good to see you!” To this day, that’s the modus operandi of the typical salesperson. This cheesy, salesy approach is killing your sales opportunities. So, here’s how to be instantly irresistible to prospects: Be different from everyone else. Be low-key and genuine and get right to the point. People are so used to that old chummy act. It’s cliché and transparent. Drop the fluff and be direct.
How to Be Instantly Irresistible in Sales Tip #2: Dig right into their challenges.
Most salespeople are still trying to persuade prospects that their offering is going to benefit them. The problem with this approach is that everyone doing it, so it comes off as salesy. It’s also not what gets people to actually buy. Prospects want to solve their most pressing challenges, and therefore the salesperson that gets right into understanding a prospect’s critical challenges is going to seem like a strategic advisor instead of just another vendor. This is key to how to be instantly irresistible in sales. Once salespeople truly understand the prospect’s challenges, they can simply present the solution that makes working with them the next logical step.
How to Be Instantly Irresistible in Sales Tip #3: Don’t need the business.
This is one of the most counterintuitive ideas in selling today, but it’s also one of the most powerful. Let’s say you need surgery and you call on two different surgeons. When you call the first one, the office administrator answers the phone and says, “Absolutely, when can you come in? Want to come in tomorrow, or how about Thursday?” The second surgeon’s office says, “Well, actually, Dr. Jones is incredibly busy. The earliest we can schedule you in is seven weeks from now.
Would you still like to make that appointment?” Which surgeon do you feel more confident in? The second one, of course. Sales is the same way. Prospects can sense when salespeople are desperate for the business. On the other hand, when salespeople seem like they don’t need the business, prospects instantly feel more respect for them. That’s why “not needing the business” is a crucial component of how to be instantly irresistible in sales.
How to Be Instantly Irresistible in Sales Tip #4: Disqualify. Now.
This builds off of the previous point, but it’s really critical. Most salespeople aren’t only trying to persuade prospects to do business with them—they’re also trying to get every single prospect to buy from them. They want to close everyone.
However, one of the secrets of how to be instantly irresistible in sales is this: At least 50% of prospects aren’t a good fit, and they should be disqualified as soon as possible. Irresistible salespeople disqualify those prospects who aren’t a good fit right up front. When prospects see that salespeople are looking to disqualify them, they suddenly feel at ease, and they naturally become more attracted to those salespeople. By actually seeking to disqualify those who are not a good fit, salespeople are going to be far more irresistible to those that are a fit.
